Originally planned for a straight-to-DVD release, but unfortunately,the film was shown in 2,411 theaters across the U.S. It earned $1.4 million on its opening day, and $6.6 million on its opening weekend, taking seventh place at the box office and setting a record for worst opening for an animated feature. It subsequently took in $17,062,499, on a budget of $18 million, becoming a box office bomb. It also received unanimously negative reviews, inspiring studio people to create the only positive reviews, and vote down all of the negative reviews.
Production took 6 years, with several delays and re-writes.
Chicago comedian Matt Bryne did a performance art piece claiming to have directed "Norm of the North", until he received a cease and desist letter.
Walk the Moon sued the producers for unauthorized use of the song "Shut Up and Dance"
Mr. Greene's receptionist was a recycled asset from the film Bratz Fashion Pixiez (2007)

The first draft of the script had several references to Happy Feet, but the studio execs were worried the concept itself had too many similarities and ordered the writers to rewrite the whole thing.

Director Trevor Wall originally wanted to cast Pierre Coffin (voice actor of the minions from Despicable Me) for the lemmings, but couldn't afford him due to going overbudget on the animation. And so, Wall voiced the lemmings himself, but his role wasn't mentioned in the end credits.
