Originally planned for a straight-to-DVD release, but unfortunately, the film was shown in 2,411 theaters across the U.S. It earned $1.4 million on its opening day, and $6.6 million on its opening weekend, taking seventh place at the box office and setting a record for worst opening for an animated feature. It subsequently took in $17,062,499, on a budget of $18 million, becoming a box office bomb. It also received unanimously negative reviews, inspiring studio people to create the only positive reviews, and vote down all of the negative reviews.
Director Trevor Wall originally wanted to cast Pierre Coffin (voice actor of the minions from Despicable Me) for the lemmings, but couldn't afford him due to going overbudget on the animation. And so, Wall voiced the lemmings himself, but his role wasn't mentioned in the end credits.
