Storyline

Bilbo Baggins the Hobbit was just minding his own business, when his occasional visitor Gandalf the Wizard drops in one evening . One by one, a whole group of dwarves drop in, and before he knows it, Bilbo has joined their quest to reclaim their kingdom, taken from them by an evil dragon named Smaug. The only problem is that Gandalf has told the dwarves that Bilbo is an expert burglar, but he isn't.... Written by Murray Chapman <[email protected]>

Trivia

Gandalf at the end says that members of Bilbo's family not yet born may one day understand the ring. And that the story is not really ending, but just beginning. These lines were not in the book, nor was there any indication that there was any more to the ring than mere invisibility. At the time the original book was written, there was no intention to connect The Hobbit with the Tolkien Legendrum which includes The Silmarillion and The Lord of The Rings (which hadn't been written yet). However, in 1977, it was well known that the ring Bilbo found and the events he participated in were a prelude to a much larger story. See more »

Goofs

When Bilbo finds the ring it's shown with an elaborate design on it. In the book the ring was plain and unadorned. Although when you put it in the fire, writing in the Black Speech appears. See more »

Good adaption, although compact
4 May 2004 | by See all my reviews

'The Hobbit' in its animated shape is what we have to go with until Peter Jackson finishes the LotR prequel (hey, it's bound to happen...), but it doesn't mean all one should do is wait for that occasion. Watch the Rankin-Bass classic!

Rankin-Bass are behind the huge 80's successes 'Thundercats', 'Silverhawks' etc and also shine here with their interpretation of Tolkien's masterpiece. 'The Hobbit' is in this shape more of a family/children's movie than the new Lord of the Rings movies, and its runtime of only 78 minutes makes it feel a little stressed through since the scenes aren't given much time each. But nevertheless, it features good animation, solid voicework and music that is FAR MORE fantasy-like than the more majestic approach in Peter Jackson's movies. See this movie with your children!

Only backdraft I have to say is the runtime. 8/10
