'Hitman's Bodyguard' Tops Weekend with $21M+ Opening as 'Logan Lucky' Falls Short

3 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Lionsgate and Summit's action-comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard finished ahead of pre-weekend expectations and took the #1 spot at the weekend box office while WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation scored a second place finish over its sophomore frame. The weekend wasn't too kind, however, to Bleecker's Logan Lucky, which did manage to finish third, but was unable to crack double digits from over 3,000 locations. As for the weekend overall, the top twelve narrowly escaped becoming the worst weekend of 2017 by less than $1 million by combining for $81.5 million. As of right now, this means the month of August is currently pacing 34% behind August last year while the summer season is pacing 12.8% behind last year. With an estimated $21.6 million, Lionsgate's release of The Hitman's Bodyguard finished #1 at the box office. This outperforms Mojo's pre-release forecast and is just a shade below historical averages for a film of this size and genre from Lionsgate. »

‘Super Troopers 2’ Lands Spring 2018 Release Date

Fox Searchlight has set an April 20, 2018, release date for “Super Troopers 2” — 17 years after the original.

Jay Chandrasekhar is directing the comedy sequel, as he did on the original. Filmmaking team Broken Lizard raised $4.4 million in a 30-day crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in 2015 that saw more than 50,000 contributors. It was one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns for a movie along with the $5.7 million raised by fans for the “Veronica Mars” movie starring Kristen Bell.

Donation incentives for “Super Tropers 2” on the first day included a producer title for $10,000, a speaking actor role for $10,000, a trip to the ballpark with the main actors for $15,000, and the patrol car to be used in the filming for $35,000. “Super Troopers 2” met the initial goal of $2 million (set by Fox Searchlight) in 26 hours.

Super Troopers 2” reunites all five Troopers from the original film — Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. The »

John Boyega Hints Again at Possible Cameos by Princes William and Harry in ‘Jedi’

18 August 2017 8:47 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

John Boyega has hinted again that heirs to the British throne Prince William and Prince Harry and actor Tom Hardy have cameos in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program Friday morning to promote Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” Boyega was asked about the rumors he fueled when last on the show – that the two royals had secret cameos in “The Last Jedi” as stormtroopers – and whether the princes had lines.

“I think they took that scene out,” Boyega said jokingly, then added: “I’ve had enough with those Prince William secrets, man. They came on set; they were there, man. Tom Hardy was there, too – I said it. I’m sick of hiding this.”

The actor, who plays former stormtrooper Finn in the sequel trilogy, said questions had dogged him ever since the rumors first began circulating in April 2016, when William and Harry visited the “Jedi” set (pictured). “Every time I get »

Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher to Star in ‘Shaft’ Sequel

After originally planning a full reboot of the ’70s classic, New Line is reverting back to a familiar formula for the next installment of “Shaft,” while also leaving the door open for a new face to take over the franchise.

Sources tell Variety that Samuel L. Jackson is in negotiations to reprise his role of the titular character with “Survivor’s Remorse” star Jessie T. Usher in talks to play Jackson’s son in the film.

Tim Story is directing a script from “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris.

The original 1971 version — based on Ernest Tidyman’s novel — starred Richard Roundtree as a smooth private detective who’s hired by a drug lord to find his kidnapped daughter. The character became a pop culture icon and the theme song, written by Isaac Hayes, went on to win an Oscar.

Paramount Pictures rebooted the film in 2002 with Samuel L. Jackson taking over the role, and »

It's a trap! Or maybe not.

Adam Driver will intrigue Star Wars fans with a Sunday interview on the Today show in which he discusses his Sith character, Kylo Ren.

The 33-year-old actor doesn't give anyway any specifics, obviously, but he does make a comment that is interesting when asked by Willie Geist if fans "will be happy with that happens to Kylo."

Driver responds, "God, I hope. I think it will be hopefully unexpected."

Now, this could mean anything. Perhaps Luke or Rey cut him down or maybe he pulls a Darth Vader and redeems himself. Or maybe none of the »

Jerry Lewis, Legendary Comedian, Dies at 91

Jerry Lewis, one of Hollywood’s most famous comedians, died Sunday at the age of 91, TheWrap has learned. Lewis was one-half of a legendary comedy duo with Dean Martin, entertaining the crowd with his slapstick antics while Martin reacted as the straight man of the pair. From 1948 to 1956, Lewis and Martin appeared together in 16 comedy films produced by Paramount, including “My Friend Irma,” “At War With The Army,” and “Scared Stiff.” The pair quietly but acrimoniously split after making “Hollywood or Bust” in 1956, and would not be seen together on screen or TV for another 20 »

Jerry Lewis, the brash slapstick comic who teamed with Dean Martin in the 1950s and later starred in “The Nutty Professor” and “The Bellboy” before launching the Muscular Dystrophy telethon, has died in Las Vegas. He was 91.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John Katsilometes reported that he died at his home at 9:15 a.m. Sunday morning. Lewis’ agent has since confirmed the news to Variety.

Over the past ten years of his life, the cranky icon’s reputation soured slightly as he was forced to apologize for making a gay slur on camera during the 2007 telethon, continued to make racist and misogynistic jokes into his ’90s, and didn’t hesitate to share his right-wing political views.

In addition to his most famous films, Lewis also appeared in a number of notable works, such as Martin Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy,” but was largely offscreen from the late ’60s on and was more active with his »

‘Wonder Woman’ Passes Original ‘Spider-Man’ at Box Office, Reaches $800 Million Worldwide

The summer box office may be struggling immensely, but for Warner Bros.’ “Wonder Woman,” the milestones and records just keep pouring in nearly three months after it first arrived in theaters. The film has now grossed over $800 million worldwide, and its $404 million domestic total puts it seventh all-time for superhero movies, passing the original “Spider-Man” made back in 2002. While adjustments for inflation would still put the “Spider-Man” total well above “Wonder Woman,” only a small handful of superhero films have been able to pass its raw total in the 15 years since it popularized the genre. “Wonder »
